Shehnai::
Shehnai is one of the most highly developed wind instruments of India. From time immemorial, it has been associated with ceremonial occasions. Today it has pride of place in the galaxy of concert instruments, very largely because of master players like Ustad Bishmillah Khan.
Shehnai which is about 1.5 to 2 feet length, is similar to the oboe of the West. It is cylindrical in shape and it gradually widens towards the lower end. It has usually eight or nine holes in a line, the upper seven of which only are used for play. It is made of dark blackwood with a metal bell fixed to the broader end. The reed is fixed to the narrow blowing end. The instrument is not only sonorous, but also deep and highly sensitive. The technique of play is extremely difficult, but once mastered, it can produce a variety of chromatic patterns, with all their semitones and quarter-tones.
