Sitar is one of the most celebrated string instrument of North India. A plucked string instrument, 3 feet long and 3 inches wide, it consists of a wooden base attached to a hallow gourd. It has seven main strings and sixteen to twenty four movable frets fixed to the base. To add resonance and volume, it has twenty sympathetic strings below the main strings. The main strings are plucked by a wire plectrum worn on the forefinger of the right hand.
In the hands of virtuosi like Ravi Shankar and Vilayat Khan, the instrument can produce the entire gamut from the subtle, delicate nuances to the rich, vigorous effects.
